Alaska . . . the land of ice and snow, right? Doesn’t sound like a place for gardens when you put it that way!
We have some secrets to keep everyone from moving north and turning Alaska into California, and one of those secrets is about to get let out of the bag. Even some Alaskans don’t know this secret: gardens grow faster and bigger here than anywhere else I’ve ever lived! (I’m sure there are parts of Alaska where this isn’t true, but where I live it’s true.)

To have a healthy garden, you need to have healthy soil. We don’t feed the plants, we feed the soil. When the soil is healthy and nutrient-rich, the plants flourish. (It doesn’t hurt to have round-the-clock light all summer, either!)
We are the same way. To have a healthy body, we need to eat a healthy diet. When our diet is nutrient-rich, based upon whole, unprocessed plants, every part of our body responds and flourishes. If you want to learn more about that, click here.
Our garden feeds my body and my soul. There’s nothing quite like working in partnership with the earth while growing a garden to feel our deep connection with the seasons, the cycles of nature, the sun, rain, and microbes that make the soil a living substance. It’s a beautiful and amazing experience that is both humbling and exhilarating.
If you have never tried gardening, I’d encourage you to just try it on a very small scale. Get one pot and plant some lettuce or other greens for your salads. You’ll discover the magic and mystery of life when a tiny seed wakes up after it’s long sleep and becomes a big, sturdy plant. It amazes me every single year!
