The GOOD NEWS is that we can do a LOT. Because the better our health care, the less we need medical care. What? ? ? Most of the diseases we suffer and die from in our modern world are lifestyle diseases: heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, COPD, Alzheimer’s Disease, and obesity. Since these diseases are primarily the result of our unhealthy lifestyle, we need to change our lifestyle to prevent and reverse these diseases. And the single most important lifestyle factor, common to each of these diseases, is our unhealthy diet, high in processed foods and animal products. So what is the solution? . . . The adoption of a plant-based diet of whole, unprocessed foods: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Fortunately, the word is getting out (but not fast enough!) The following advice comes from the 2013 issue of the Journal of Kaiser Permanente. (Kaiser is one of the largest integrated managed care plans in America.)
I hope for the day when all people can easily receive the medical care they need, without going bankrupt to get it. But even more, I look forward to the day when it is commonplace for each of us to provide our own excellent health care, starting with a whole-foods, plant-based diet. For the better our health care, the less we will need medical care!

Delisa, have you heard of insurance companies or managed care companies like Kaiser Permanente providing nutrition classes like yours? Seems like a great potential payoff for them...

Frank, that really does seem like a good idea for an insurance program. I am also thinking that companies that are "self insured" would want to go this route. I haven't heard of any of these companies providing classes like mine -- but maybe that will be a next step! It would be such a huge payoff for them and for the individuals that make the change.

Have you thought about partnering with Alaska Heart Institute to teach? A lot of the cardiologists are behind this now.

I'd love to partner with them. I hadn't heard that the current cardiologists are very open, but maybe I'm mistaken. Dr. Gunnar Strobel was a great proponent of plant-based diets with his patients, but he has retired now. He even spoke to the Alaska Vegan Society a couple of years ago, and offered to come speak again.
