Even though I have no idea how to pull that off, I DO know we can give ourselves a second bloom, even when it looks like we’re moving into the autumn of our lives.
Bill Clinton provides us with one of the best examples of reverse aging. In 2004, he was in bad shape. After years of eating a famously unhealthy diet, it was his turn for heart bypass surgery.
Heart bypass surgery is so common now, it’s almost predictable. But even though this radical surgery is increasingly used as the answer to unhealthy coronary arteries, it does NOTHING to solve the problem. Unless you stop the behavior that caused the problem in the first place, the surgery is a stop-gap solution at best.
Fortunately for former president Clinton, he knew a doctor who told him the truth. But not until after one of his bypass veins had given out in 2010 and he had a couple of stents inserted. Another stop-gap measure.
At this point, Dr. Dean Ornish, a friend of Clinton’s, told him in no uncertain terms that this was what he could expect if he didn’t change the way he was eating.
President Clinton then began to read and learn how a vegan diet could help him. He read Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D. and The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D.
By this time, he could see the handwriting on the wall. He realized the medical interventions weren’t going to return him to health. And he wanted to live to be a grandfather. So he began eating a vegan diet.
Looking at pictures of Bill Clinton now, at age 67, is like looking at my lilac blooming at the end of August. But he doesn’t need to be the only one blooming at 67. That’s something we can all achieve by making the same choices he made. Eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet, get some good, healthy exercise, and watch your self-healing body return to health.
